Cholera Vaccination

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal illness caused by a bacteria. The disease infects the small bowel and causes painless, watery diarrhoea. It is known to infect only humans. It is usually transmitted via infected water that has been contaminated by faeces and less commonly via food.

The disease is found throughout the world particularly in countries where sanitation is poor, particularly parts of Africa, India and South East Asia.

When is cholera vaccine indicated?

Consider vaccination against cholera for:
  • Relief or disaster aid workers.
  • People with remote itineraries in areas where cholera epidemics are occurring and there is limited access to medical care.
  • Travellers to potential cholera risk areas, for whom vaccination is considered to be potentially beneficial.
  • No traveller should be required to demonstrate vaccination against cholera.
  • The vaccine is not recommended for prevention of travellers' diarrhoea.

When is cholera vaccine contraindicated?

Do not give cholera vaccine if the person:
  • Has a current severe febrile illness.
  • Has had a confirmed anaphylactic reaction to a previous dose of oral cholera vaccine
  • Has had a confirmed anaphylactic reaction to formaldehyde or any other vaccine component
  • Has acute gastrointestinal illness

What are the adverse effects of cholera vaccine?

Mild gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhoea, nausea) are the most commonly reported symptoms occurring at a frequency of 0.1–1%.

Serious adverse events, (a flu-like syndrome, rash, arthralgia, and paraesthesia) are rare, occurring in fewer than one per 10,000 doses distributed.
