Founded in 1913 by Mario Prada, Prada have been described a monumental brand that signifies style and luxury. In collaboration with his brother Martini, Prada first began their fashion venture as a boutique store offering luxury leather goods and luggage.
Prada as we know it today has evolved under Miuccia Prada's direction, especially when applying her savvy strategy in 1976. Miuccia wanted to appeal to a new, stylish audience and stem away from her grandfather’s original leather designs for luggage and handbags.
At just 28 years old, Miuccia Prada was considered young in the fashion industry, especially when grasping her hands on a timeless brand like Prada. Smart and fashion-conscious, Miuccia had a doctorate in political science. Known as a feminist, Miuccia most recent fashion collections have defied seasonal conventions. Referencing to themes of femininity and power, her S/S14 collection scooped the top prize at the Designs of the Year award ceremony in 2014.
Just a decade after her widely known success, Miuccia added to the prosperous facet of the Prada story with a collection of fragrances. In 2003, Prada began offering exclusive artisan fragrances in their boutique stores and only a handful of department stores. Each of the fragrances focused on a single note, varying from Orange Flower, Opoponax, Violet and Tuberose. Her first fragrance Prada Amber was unveiled in 2004 which was described as a ‘new age’ aroma in the history of amber fragrances. Miuccia designed the fragrance with an ingredient rooted in ancient perfumery, which was then reworked by Max Gavarry and Carlos Benaïm for a contemporary twist.
After the launch of Prada Amber, Prada released the alternative fragrance for men, Amber Pour Homme. Combined with its original amber composition, perfumer Daniela Roche-Andrier created the unique blend with a rice and complex base consisting of amber, vanilla, labdanum, Tonka and patchouli. Still a fragrance admired today, the leather note as a masculine and sultry twist to the fragrance.
In 2007, Prada introduced Infusion d’Iris for women. Basking in a woody-oriental fragrance, this fragrance was inspired by the old method of producing iris extract, which took six months of soaking until the sweetly fresh iris notes were extracted. Boasting a modern and unique blend, the fragrance begins with notes of mandarin, galbanum, orange and orange blossom immersed with a composition of iris, cedar and vetiver.
However, it wasn’t until the youthful spirited aroma of Prada Candy that finally put Prada on the map for desired scents. Embodying a bespoke formula boasting femininity, Miuccia Prada desired an excessive fragrance with too much of everything. Fusing together an elegant blend of musk, vanilla-like benzoin and a delicious caramel heart, Prada Candy provides a unique and signature scent widely recognised across the globe. With an explosion of shocking pink and gold, the perfect contrast of colours invites us to a first taste of the velvety caramel fragrance, infused with a fun, feminine and flirty twist.
Next in the collection was Prada Candy L’Eau. Indulged with a fresh and radiant scent, Prada Candy L’Eau still entailed a subtle caramel warmth. The bottle design also won a Fragrance Foundation Award in 2012 for Best Packaging of the Year. Alluring and spontaneous, Prada Candy L'Eau is both pleasurable and enigmatic. Boasting the many facets of Candy's personality, Prada Candy L'Eau perfectly reflects a luxurious blend of white musks, benzoin and Oriental floral notes, perfect for an everyday fragrance.
In 2014, Prada introduced Prada Candy Florale to their collection. Similar to their earlier fragrances, it was created by Daniela Roche-Andrier, however this time it was designed to create a similar scent to a fresh bouquet of flowers standing on the counter of an Italian ice cream shop. Reminding us of the true essence of Prada, this delicious composition is carefully blended with luxurious notes of limoncello sorbet, flower of peony, benzoin, musk, caramel and honey. Adorned with fun florals and flirty pastel pinks, the Prada Candy Florale boasts the classic Prada design with a classic twist. Most recently, in 2016 Candy Kiss was unveiled as the latest fragrance of the Prada Candy collection. Combining the addictive nature of the Candy composition, their latest perfume ignites the classic Candy characteristics, helping re-activate emotions and sensations.
L'Homme Prada is the most recent addition to Prada’s aftershave collection. Launched in 2016, the unique blend consists of the signature Prada fragrance of amber and iris. Light, airy and masculine, the fragrance also has notes of neroli, geranium and patchouli.
L'Homme Intense Prada and La Femme Intense Prada launched in 2017 and are a more intense version of the original.
The Prada Luna Rossa collection is the widely admired aftershave line. With three separate aftershaves including Luna Rossa, Luna Rossa Eau Sport and Luna Rossa Extreme, the collection was created from the pursuit of excellence. Using Luna Rossa as its established name, the collection captures the true essence of innovation.
Unveiled in 2016, La Femme Prada was unveiled in 2016. Launched alongside L’Homme Prada, the pair represents men and women as equals, reunited in identical vision. Adopting the classic Prada scent, La Femme Prada steps away from clichés and trends to recreate floral perfumes and femininity.
Prada is now a worldwide empire with multiple stores all across the globe. With a wide selection of fragrances, the earliest edition was created in 1990 and the latest fragrance was unveiled this year.
