What are the symptoms of a UTI?

Common UTI symptoms include a frequent and intense urge to urinate, a burning sensation when urinating, cloudy or strange-smelling urine, and pelvic pain or pressure.

What causes a UTI?

Most UTIs are caused by E. coli bacteria from the digestive tract that enter the urinary tract through the urethra and multiply in the bladder. Risk factors include sexual intercourse, improper wiping, and holding urine too long.

How are UTIs diagnosed?

A doctor will likely ask about symptoms and medical history and may test a urine sample for the presence of white blood cells, red blood cells, and bacteria. A culture can identify the type of bacteria causing the infection.

How are UTIs treated?

Most uncomplicated UTIs can be treated with a short course of oral antibiotic medication. It is important to finish all prescribed antibiotics even if symptoms improve. For recurring infections, a longer course may be needed.

What can I do to prevent UTIs?

Drink plenty of fluids, urinate when the need arises, wipe from front to back after using the toilet, avoid potential irritants like scented products, wear cotton underwear, and urinate before and after intercourse.
